Why did you want to become a doctor?

Why did you want to become a doctor?

I knew I wanted to become a doctor when I saw a highly dedicated team of very professionally trained cancer physicians taking care of my aunt at the Tata Memorial Hospital, India’s oldest and largest cancer institute.

Why did you want to specialize in hematology and oncology?

Why did you want to specialize in hematology and oncology?

I was a medical intern at Christian Medical College, the first institution to do a stem cell transplant in India. While I was there, they started to train folks in hematology and oncology. Just knowing how skilled one had to be when taking care of patients with such unique needs and the combination of research that comes along with hematology and oncology made me realize that this is what I want to pursue.

What are non-Hodgkin lymphomas and T-cell lymphomas? What led to your interest in researching them?

What are non-Hodgkin lymphomas and T-cell lymphomas? What led to your interest in researching them?

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is cancer of the lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell within the immune system. For T-cell lymphoma, T cells are a type of lymphocyte that destroy tumor cells in the body. You can think of T-cell lymphoma as basically cancer of the cancer-fighting cells.

On the first day of my fellowship in hematology and oncology at New York University Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, I saw my mentor, Dr. Owen O’Connor, take care of a patient with T-cell lymphoma. I realized how sick this patient was from the disease, how grim her prognosis was, and how limited her treatment options were. This inspired me to want to understand the biology of T-cell lymphomas, make scientific discoveries, and design new therapies. It made me excited about the whole process of medical research.

What does a week-in-your-life at PETAL Consortium look like?

What does a week-in-your-life at PETAL Consortium look like?

During the week, I split my time between being in the clinic and research. For a day when I’m in the clinic, it's extremely busy because I see every patient with T-cell lymphoma at Massachusetts General Hospital.

In the clinic, I diagnose patients and discuss their treatment strategies. I also speak with the clinical trials team to make sure that patients enrolled in our research studies get treated and that their responses and side-effects are addressed and accurately documented. Additionally, I check in with our clinical research coordinators. They screen patients for research studies and collect blood and tissue samples. At the end of the day, I focus on my patients who are hospitalized, either because they're newly diagnosed, getting active therapies in the hospital, or have complications associated with their treatment.

On a research day, as the principal investigator and founder of PETAL Consortium, I bring together 20 different treatment centers from all over the world to improve T-cell lymphoma outcomes. For this, I keep track of the regulatory processes, operations, and data analysis for all our treatment centers. I work with Brigham and Women's Hospital’s Center for Clinical Investigation to ensure that each piece of PETAL Consortium is working optimally and aligned with federal policies.
